(male announcer) live from the kron 4 news station, this is the kron 4 news. pam >>pam: tonight at eight. a community and country in28- people are dead after a shooting rampage at an elementary school in new town. connecticut. 20 of those victims. are young children. as the nation mourns. investigators continue to search for answers. about the gunman. and why he went on this rampage. maribel aber. is in newtown with the latest. >> tragedy in a small connecticut community. "evil visited this community today" >> police say a shooter struck sandy hook elementry school in newtown friday morning. >> "there were 18 children pronounced dead at the hospital. six adults scene" >> a parent inside the school at the time said she believed at least 100 rounds had been fired. the alleged shooter is dead and police have recoveredthe first 9-1-1 call came in around 930 am, police shooter search. >> "there were police with rifles and handguns, they were on the roof, they were surrounding the school, they were going in through the roof."

"our main objective was to evacuate as quickly and efficiently and as possible school." >> president obama ordered u-s flags to half-staff in honor of the victims. speaking about the children killed, he fought back tears. >> "they had their entire lives ahead of them, birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own." >> he also offered assistance, and condolences, to connecticut's governor, during a difficult time. >> "we'll do whatever we can to overcome this event. we will get through it. but this is a terrible time for this families." >> the community is left to wonder how this could happen in their town. >> "i don't know if there's any safe place anymore in this world." i'm maribel aber reporting. >>pam: as the families of the victims mourn the loss of their loved ones. police are looking into the backround of the suspected shooter. kron-4's dan kerman continues our team coverage. he has more on what we've learned about the young suspect. and his family. this suspect was dressed in black battle fatigues with 3 weapons and two handguns and the rifle. they found

additional weapons at the school. it is believe that all of those weapons were registered to his mother. the suspects older brother, ryan in this video is 24 years old was taken into custody in hoboken, new jersey. he is not believed to be involved in if the shooting. he has not been in touch for his brother with two years. reporters spoke with a woman that grew up with the suspect. >> finding out that it was somebody that i knew that had ultimately done all of this was upsetting. you cannot i imagined it would happen. i have known him since first grade. he was reserved, quiet. i never noticed anything scary, violent or anything like that. i would have never suspected anything like that i think. someone that went under the radar and cut themselves. you would never

think that he would do something crazy like this. the -- kept to itself. >> the father also was interviewed-half they have been divorced. and as this investigation continues law enforcement will continue to provide more details. >> de dan kerman. for a better idea of exactly where all of this took place. grant lodes has more. return to index of memorial mass was held tonight in memory of the victims of today's elementary school shooting. families gathered to mourn at the saint rose of lima roman catholic church in new town. they heard the gunshots, and they came out into the hallway. all were shot, with 20 children and six adults died. not far from this school is the suspect's home where he reportedly lived with his mother. the suspect shot his mother early this morning before going to school and killed 26 people. in the suspects brother in

hoboken, new jersey the brother is being questioned and cooperative. he says that he has not been in contact with his brother in recent years. >> just hours a, this memorial mass in memory of that that comes at the elementary school victim in connecticut. at the st. rose of lima roman catholic church. connecticut governor dan attended. he gave remarks. as the tragedy in connecticut unfolded today. officials at all levels reacted to what was happening. coverage tonight from the newsroom.charles? yes, throughout the day we have been getting messages of condolences and comfort. the house also, that something needs to be done to stop this from happening again. >> it is unfortunate.

>> in colorado condolence and comfort coming in people all across the country. but there are also many voices saying that in colorado this afternoon, the principal of columbine high school, which has seen it's share of tragedy, said that he wanted the families in connticut to know that >> i think that what all of are feeling now as a partent, as a grandparent, as an educator we are just imagining what it must be like for those people so our thoughts and prayers are there. >> here in california, governor jerry brown released a statement today saying, "we all mourn the heartbreaking loss of those elementary. we pray for their families and loved ones." in conneticut, governor dan malloy spoke of the tragic reality of what has happened. >> you can never be prepared for this kind of incident. what has happened and transpired at that school building will leave a mark on this community and every family impacted. >> along with messages of comfort, there were also calls for more to be done to prevent this from happening again. former astraunt, and husband of congresswoman gabriel giffords, mark kelly said today that "this time our response must consist of more than regret, sorrow, and condolence. the children of sandy hook elementary school and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who have the courage to participate in a meaningful discussion about our gun laws

we have to stand up as a nation and say enough is enough. what is wrong with our society? and again. there's not one right answer." coming up later in this newscast, we'll have more reaction from the president on today's events and dig a control issue. but for now, in the newsroom... charles clifford kron 4 news. >>pam: in bay area news. three people are dead tonight. after a horrific crash on a south bay freeway. this is video of the scene courtesy of sky-7- h-d from a-b-c-7- news. the c-h-p says, a vehicle slammed into a disabled car that was pulled over to the side of northbound 280 near redwood city. all lanes were re-opened just about a half hour ago. kron-4's philippe djegal is there. with more.

there were two women and one man is dead. one man has moderate/major injuries and another man is in custody of suspicion of the vehicular mont manslaughter. and this is a mangled mess on the northbound 280. these two car crashed together from abc seven high- definition video. this began at 3:00 p.m. when the driver of this lexis. there were four people inside of this lexis sedan pulled into the center. >> it appeared that they were changing the tire. >> the c h p says that the 82 year-old driver of this old wagon was speeding when he collided with the alexis. he lived and three of the four victims' not living. it collided with the-lexus.

>> to not stop in the center divide. if possible, exit the freeway, completely. a investigators collected evidence mapping out the crime scene at one. traffic was backed up nearly 10 mi.. in san mateo county, kron 4 news. >> the great mall in milpitas was closed for most of the afternoon today because of the mabomb threat at kohl's jeff bush explained explains what police are looking for. >> it is been tense at this mall in milpitas it started at 2:30 this employee who found a note in the men's room. it was a bomb threat.

[ male announcer ] only from at&t. ♪ san francisco's public schools are on high security alert after today's massacre at a connecticut elementary. kron 4's alecia reid tells us what the city's school district is doing to help keep its students safe. but o >> classes went on as scheduled at city schools today, but the san francisco school district was on high alert. no chances were being taken after the massacre in newtown connecticut, that left more than 2 dozen people dead --- most of them children. it's epidemic you know, with these mass murders, and we have to assure our children that's exactly what the city is doingthe district is allowing parents to speak to their children about the tragedy first, but assured them that counselors are ready to help. children, especially younger children are going to need

right now but we will see cold conditions with the cloud coverage. it is hovering offshore and when it moves and it could keep the temperatures a bit more constant. however, that rainfall will be tomorrow. ahoy 2:00, light spread widespread showers. and a bit spotty by 5:00 p.m.. through saturday night by sunday morning and late sunday morning and another round with heavier weather cells concentrated in the north bay by 1:00 p.m. however, through san jose it will be dry carho freezing right now in livermore, and vallejo. 30's to the peninsula, and it will be cold tomorrow, chilly.

>>pam: an elementary school massacre has left 28 dead including 20 children in connecticut. police say the gunman was 20-year-old adam lanza. his mother was a kindergarten teacher at the connecticut school where this happened. but she was found dead at the house she shared with her son. police have confirmed that

the suspect is also dead but how he died has not been released by police. adam lanza's older brother ryan - has been questioned by police - but it's not believed he was involved in the shooting. at of this time not all of the 20 children who died have been positively identified yet. parents, students and witnesses recount the minutes after the tragedy. >> when i was getting in my car i heard sirens going off continuously. car, after a car after car some were flying past my house and going around again to the school. this house is three houses away from the school. >> when we first arrived there, there was not a lot of security to guard. three children came out. one had a bloody face. >> we are immediately jump in the car and headed down

here. i was really,-kind of mayhem with children, teachers, identification of the children. finding out what the situation was in making sure that everyone else was saved. starting with neighbors, school, friends, and that has unfolded. >> we were immediately crying. petrified of what happened. and i think they are both older than some of the other kids in the school. my son was in the gymnasium when it happened. we heard the gunshots. >> we saw the police officers, on the roof and in the building. >> gunshots? >> we saw the officers kind of--there right outside the door trying to find the guy. >> it was shocking. i got the call at work this morning i cannot believe a small town like this, would have something like this

happen. and at this elementary school? >> this does not seem real or possible. you read this in the newspaper, and you think oh my gosh! that poor family, and a something happens so close to home. i think that i am still in shock. >> first of all, our hearts and prayers go out for this terrible incident, tragic. how our police are working closely with the newton police department with mutual involvement to provide services they could not provide. also the state police are leading this investigation. >> it was terrified. i am still terrified. i think i am still in shock. >> for everybody scared? >> yes. some of them had a stomach ache. >> they would not even let us inside the building. one of the cops said that this was the worst he had ever seen in his entire career.

colorado in aurora. or a street corner in chicago. these children are our children. we are going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent tragedies like this. regardless of the politics. this evening, michelle and i will do what every parent will do. hugging our children a little bit tighter and we will tell them that we love them. we will remind each other how deeply we love one another. there are families in connecticut that cannot do that tonight. they need all of us, right now. an hour days to come, the community needs to be our best as americans. i will do everything in my power as president to help. while nothing can fill the space of a lost child, loved one. all of us can extend a hand to those in need. to

to the gun control issue. right after that, new york mayor michael bloomberg issued a stinging statement on the issue. mayor bloomberg said- quote -'meaningful action' is not enough. we need immediate action. adding. quote -- 'we have heard all the rhetoric before.. what we have not seen is leadership - not from the white house and not from congress." as you may know -- gun control has been a controversial topic for many years. particularly with the

tremendous strength of the gun lobby with the national rifle association. earlier today, i talked to our political analyst micahel yaki -- to get his take a listen. again, that was our political analyst michael yaki. >>pam: in other bay area news. police are investigating a shooting that took place at a san rafael transit center early friday afternoon. kron four's daniel villareal

shows us where it took place. and what police are looking for. before 1pm on friday police were notified a man had been shot at this busy transit center in san rafael. police say a man with a gun got out of a car and fired at a man who was waiting at this platform. the injured victim stumbled away as he tried to escape and collapsed at this nearby platform. the suspect then got in a car and escaped but not without being seen by several witnesses. >> it was very busy here at 1:00. the car was described to us as a cold sedan. the shooter was described as a black male, 62-64 with dark clothing armed with a handgun. >> two platforms at this transit center had to be closed for several hours during the investigation but busses were able to operate out of two other platforms at this location. police are now focusing their efforts on finding the shooter after an all points bulletin and nearby roadblocks resulted the unidentified vicitm is a 22 year old male and was taken to a nearby hospital, his condition is still unknown. in san rafael daniel villareal kron four news. >>pam: the markets turn on a

down note tonight. if wall street, the dow jones fell 36 points, the nasdaq, 21. the s&p 500 and lost nearly six points. >>pam: the university of california says, it has suspended using the new logo it just introduced. after widespread criticism. will take another look at using the logo, sometime in fatcritics called it cheap, corporate looking and unworthy of a prestigious university. more than 46-thousand people signed an online petition, calling for the university to scrap the new logo. the logo was designed by the university's presidential office. reportedly it was only meant to be used on marketing and promotional materials. >>jacqueline: the skies are clearing at this time and the temperatures are dropping and the 30's. once again, a very cold morning and even rainfall. it'll be very much like today with
